We have been waiting for a cage fight. But none of us expected it to be so fierce and early. On July 6, 2023, a brand new application has entered the world of social media. Threads. The app is new but the concept is old. Twitter as you know it but minus Elon Musk. Everyone who is tired of Twitter's recent state plus everyone on Instagram immediately dived into this new application. You can already hear, "Here's the Twitter killer we've been waiting for" here and there. Threads, who entered the ring in this fight that started, "Is it a real threat?", "Can it kill Twitter?" First let me tell you how you can use this application. Since it is released on both IOS and Android platforms at the same time in 100 countries, you can start using it from the platform. If you are already an Instagram user, you can also log in with the same username. You can instantly follow who you followed there. Likewise, those who follow you can easily continue to follow you in this way. It’s sister application, Instagram, has made a favor for its users. Within hours, when I was followed up like this, I inevitably realized that there was nepotism. The second thing I realized is that there are similar fairy dust-like posts to those on Instagram. I hope that as the masses come together, a more common consistency can be reached. Because a new culture is being formed right in front of our eyes. In my opinion, these community cultures that platforms can or cannot create there should be considered more important than what they are called or who they are. Nowadays, there are country-sized digital communities, and the behavior patterns of those gathered in their squares also constitute local cultures and digital cultures. Now, somewhere between the country of Instagram and the country of Twitter, a new country is born and millions of immigrants from neighboring countries are creating a new culture right before our eyes. Everyone took their own knowledge, experience gained on other platforms and even their followers and came to this promised new land.
A clean page, for now. Because we are still in the honeymoon period. Everything starts well, you know. Then like mushrooms, things start to pop up.
Right now, they are going through this first stage called onboarding more smoothly than I expected. It should be noted that the application still has different and missing aspects compared to Twitter. In my opinion, one of the most important shortcomings is that we are not able to pursue topics as well as people by using conceptual search or functional "hashtags". Such an opportunity should be given, but it does not yet exist. Twitter has been trying to meet the most important minus in this area for years and we can say that it partially succeeded. It has become the main news source for many users. Until Elon Musk bought it. Since I have already summarized this process with a few videos like this, I would like to keep it short now. It seems that the love-hate relationship with Twitter will continue to get on our nerves. It is possible to share 500-character posts in Threads. You can add photos as well as videos up to 5 minutes long. If you have a blue tick on Instagram, it will come right away. Cross-posts can be made between the two platforms. I found the logo and icon to be fairly good Visually. I think the transformation of a spiral formed by speech threads into an @ sign has met the harmony of content and form. The most important feature from my point of view is the support that the application has not yet given but promised to give. The Fediverse support. And what is Fediverse? It is a combination of two words Federation and Universe. Decentralized social media. Just like the “http” that we use on websites. The World Wide Web Consortium, which is the highest authority in the world on Internet standards, has already started to recommend this protocol since 2018. In fact, those who were the first to get bored with Twitter and the first to escape took refuge in a place, including myself, the Mastodon application. Because they also supported this protocol. So why do I care about this that much? If it supports ActivityPub as it promises, we can develop a community independently of the app’s and companies. For example, my handle is @BarisOzcan as on Instagram. If it is integrated, it will be @[email protected]. in the Fediverse. The founder of Twitter, Jack Dorsey, actually wanted to make Twitter like this from the very beginning, but of course, that train is long gone now. He is now playing with the new Twitter. Trying to install Bluesky. Bluesky is supposed to be the new Twitter, but it will run on another open standard called ATProtocol, similar to ActivityPub. In other words, we may say a protocol standards war is raging.
But Bluesky, being such a unique snowflake, no one has not been getting any invitation for months. Threads opened floodgates and people started pouring in.
