I wanted to do this because one of my Chromecast TV devices is now able to be part of an audio group, whereas the other one isn't because it's stuck an older software version.
To perform this action, ensure that you have another computer connected to the same network as your Chromecast device, and run the following command:
Update command (from Windows PowerShell):
Invoke-WebRequest -Method Post -ContentType "application/json" -Body '{"params": "ota foreground"}' -Uri "http://[YOUR_CHROMECAST_IP]:8008/setup/reboot" -Verbose -UserAgent "curl"
Update Command (Unix systems [Linux & MacOS]):
curl -X POST -H "Content-Type: application/json" -d '{"params": "ota foreground"}' http://[YOUR_CHROMECAST_IP]:8008/setup/reboot -v
If you need to reboot and abort, change the parameters in the command from “ota foreground” to simply “now”, eg;
Invoke-WebRequest -Method Post -ContentType "application/json" -Body '{"params": "now"}' -Uri "http://[YOUR_CHROMECAST_IP]:8008/setup/reboot" -Verbose -UserAgent "curl"
