Maritza: I'm Maritza Barone. And this week, BIG Escapes is all about family. We show you some small business in Melbourne doing big things for little people. Joey gets shown up by the little ninjas at Martial Fitness Australia. Kara goes country. I'll show you how you can save up to 12 hours in your week. But first up, Kate is getting busy in the kitchen.
Kate: I'm in the deep end today, and I've messed up already at cutting the onion, the very first step. These kids are learning how to cook, and I tell you what, I'm already learning some good skills. Okay, guys, how do I do it? We are getting a moist here at Itsy Bitsy Chef. Everyone is cooking their little hearts out and it smells delicious. They're learning the basics of good fresh nutrition. They cook something every week. They can take it home, then they can cook for their parents.
Deanne: First and foremost, it has to be fun, and you know, it's a tangible outcome. So at the end of every session, they get a result, and it's something that they can eat. Give them the joy of cooking, first of all, and then from there, give them the skills to be able to learn how to cook. Come and enroll your kids today for a holiday program, after-school program. These kids are gonna really love cooking at the end of it, giving them long-term skills for healthy long-term cooking.
Maritza: Time to pick up the pace and learn some new life skills.
Joey: These guys would definitely kick my butt. Whatever the motivation may be for walking through the door here, there's so many positive outcomes that come with it. We're just checking out a couple of the students work on their BJJ skills, which is one of the many forms of martial arts that you're gonna find here. Now, you're gonna see these absolutely no weapons. This one here is a sports Taekwondo club. Some of these guys have represented Australia. They collide through the air. And they're coached by the man in the yellow Australian jacket, that's Allan. He comes from a competitive background, also competed in cage fighting. He's an absolute weapon of a man. And kids can start super young here.
Maritza: Work is done for the day, but I don't have to cook. I get to just eat and relax. As a busy working mom of two, I know all too well the struggles of rushing home from work and trying to get dinner on the table for hungry kids and then trying to fit in the food shopping in between. It can be incredibly stressful and makes life very tense. Now, imagine someone coming into your home and taking all of that stress away. That's exactly what Jamie from Chef Dine does...
Now, let's head out of the city where Kara is enjoying some good old country fun.
Kara: Ooh, it's feeding time for the duckies. Oh, yes. So this is Pip and this is what Animal Land is all about, experiencing firsthand what farm life is all about. So we're now in the nursery, and this is another aspect of Animal Land where you can get really up-close and personal with the animals like this little rabbit right here.
Laurie: Animal Land. Jeez, where do I start? Thirty-two years ago, we started with Animal Land family business, now, into its third generation. My kids are now working here. We bought it off mom and dad, now, 22 years ago. We have over 15, 000 visitors a year coming out to milk a cow, have a tractor ride, and nurse baby animals, have a pony ride, collect the eggs, feed the ducks on the deck. Today, we've got school groups here, plus we've also got general public tours here. So we've got mums and dads who've come out from the city. So these guys are out here actually having a hands-on experience.
The school children all get to make the butter in the churn in the dairy for only 20 minutes from the city, so yeah. How much better does that get? Families all get to come and stay here overnight. They even love it more because they get to do more things. They get dirt under their fingernails, you know. There's so many people that just want to come and kick back, relax. If they wanna go and use Wi-Fi, they've already go to the one games room communal area and they start to talk to each other. How funny is that? It's something that doesn't happen anymore.
