Many consumers know the food safety risks of dairy products, eggs and raw meat. But they are less likely to understand the risks associated with dry goods, including tree nuts such as almonds, cashews, walnuts and pistachios, said Yaohua “Betty” Feng, associate professor of food science at Purdue University.

00:14 Start by washing your hands with warm water and soap for 20 seconds
00:23 Make sure all your utensils and equipment are clean
00:33 Soak 1 cup raw, pasteurized nuts in 3 cups of drinking water for 4-8 hours
00:56 Rinse the soaked nuts
01:05 Blend soaked nuts with 2 cups of drinking water
01:31 Wash hands again with warm water and soap for 20 seconds
01:37 Strain nut milk through clean cheese cloth and squeeze to get out remaining nut milk
01:55 Store nut milk safely in a clean container for 3-4 days
