Verdún fue el resumen de la Gran Guerra. Una batalla hasta tal punto que infligió 700.000 bajas: 305.000 muertos y 400.000 heridos, casi a partes iguales entre los dos bandos. El 75% de los soldados franceses pasaron por Verdún. Los campos de Lorena fueron la síntesis de un conflicto bélico sin precedentes, en el que se utilizó todo tipo de artillería, gases asfixiantes, aviación, ametralladoras y el uso de la trinchera.
