Did you know that the TH sound in American English is actually a "range" instead of a specific placement in the mouth? That's one big reason why this is one of the most difficult sounds for English learners, both in listening and especially speaking!

There are two forms of the TH sound in English: the voiced th sound (/ð/) and the voiceless th sound (/θ/). They're made the same way, but the voiceless sound just uses breath. Don't worry about the IPA symbols for these two because they're not very useful and just make things more complicated. Also note that we spell both of these sounds with the letters "th", but there is no "t" sound and no "h" sound!

Learn how to properly (and informally) pronounce this sound, as well as common mistakes to avoid, in today's natural American English Pronunciation and Ear Training course lesson!
