Throughout my undergraduate math and computer science major, I picked up a few study tips for computer science classes that I wish I knew sooner. So basically, how to study for computer science classes.

One of the major tips is to simply just show up to your computer science classes and computer science discussion sections. In college its very tempting to simply just not attend lecture, or just watch a recording of the lecture. In reality, I noticed that just showing up and paying attention can really help with staying on top of computer science classes. Additionally, going to every computer science lab/discussion section can drastically help clarify confusing parts of lectures or programming assignments.

When it comes to taking notes in computer science classes, both writing notes by hand and typing can be good options. Personally I wrote most of my notes through college by hand, but there were definitely times that I wish I typed them. By typing, I could have more easily searched for a specific topic or keyword. Although, I did feel that physically writing helped with information retention.

In many computer science courses I saw students try to finish group programming assignments alone. Now I don't want to discourage anyone from developing strong solo work, but working in groups when allowed for computer science programming assignments can be extremely beneficial. Working in a group can help distribute the stress across multiple people, as well as help bounce ideas off one another when encountering difficult problems. Also it helps develop team dynamic skills, which are vital for entering the software engineering industry.

Specifically how to study for computer science exams, creating study guides was one of the most effective strategies I learned throughout college. Having a single document with all of the important information drastically helps with effective studying. Moreover, a collaborative study doc (like google docs), is great for crowdsourced studying, therefore every student in the class can contribute what they think will be on the exam!

For programming assignments, the best piece of advice I received from my first computer science professor was to start early and start often. Starting a programming assignment early, and working on it consistently will help avoid spending 10 hours of coding in the cs lab right before the exam is due. It also helps reduce the overall stress of any individual programming assignment.

You may encounter specific computer science topics that are just extremely difficult to grasp. For these topics, it may useful to attend discussion sections, go to professor office hours, or just watch YouTube videos. I personally found that hearing someone else explain a difficult topic, can definitely help more easily digest information!
