Liner Notes: Phil Collins is my second favorite singer of all time (behind only the great Sir Paul). And this is my favorite solo song of his. I should mention that I'm also a big Genesis fan--that's the place from which my love of Phil's vocals largely evolved. If you're only casually acquainted with Genesis from what you've heard on the radio, let me assure you that you haven't heard a vast majority of their best work. They really weren't a pop band, at least not initially. And Phil did a lot of his best work as a vocalist with Genesis, starting from when he took over for Peter Gabriel in 1976 for the album "Trick of the Tail" (Phil was the drummer for the band in the early days, and took over as the front man upon Gabriel's departure). The Genesis catalog gave Phil ample opportunity to shine and show off his versatility--his voice could be light and beautiful, soulful and plaintive, or biting and powerful, like on this track. "I Don't Care Anymore" reminds us that he can rock with the best of them, even though he's perhaps better remembered for his ballad work during his solo career. It also seems to come from a very dark and emotional place in his personal life.

I'm sure a lot of people will approach an acoustic cover of this song with great skepticism, since the drums played such an important part in the original arrangement. I was skeptical myself, I assure you! But I'm happy with where the arrangement ended up, and I think it encapsulates much of what I love about the original. I've always thought of an acoustic guitar as pulling double duty as a harmonic instrument, as well as a percussive one. And I tried my best to emulate the dynamic evolution of the original in my acoustic arrangement.

Part of the challenge of the arrangement was decided where/how to play it. I experimented with using a capo, or tuning down, but I ended up with an open tuning (tuning both up and down), with the guitar tuned to an open E-flat minor chord (low to high = Eb Bb Eb Gb Bb Eb). This allowed me to use the lower three strings as a sort of drone, simulating the awesome Taurus pedals from the original. Much of the keyboard part is played on the upper three strings. I did my best with the vocals, not having the rasp that Phil had. But I took advantage of recording this during a week when I was recovering from a sore throat, so the rasp was somewhat naturally enhanced. :)

Thanks for listening/watching, and for helping spread the music,

-Mike
