Social activist Monica Lewinsky detailed her past 24 years of trials, tribulations and PTSD last night in Sydney in front of a packed auditorium.
Lewinsky's 15 minutes of fame turned into 15 plus years of pain revealing she still suffers PTSD as a result of an affair 24 years ago with the then President of the United States.
The former famous White House intern spectacularly dumped from public office so many years ago spoke of her troubled times in the wake of the Bill Clinton scandal and how it affected her, her family and her prospects of employment.
Famous for her dalliance with the then President of the United States, Bill Clinton, the long lasting affects of the oval office relationship was laid bare to those in Sydney's Carriageworks Saturday evening.
Asked what she would tell her 22 year old self in hindsight, Lewinsky without hesitation said, "get the f*#k out of (Washington) D.C., run, run."
The 1100 strong audience laughed in unison.
Lewinsky described in detail the pain of bearing the brunt of the blame on an affair with a sitting President and the toll that ensued, revealing to the supportive audience via a question of herself, why an early 20's-something intern would be blamed for an office romance with a man 50, 28 years her senior.
The F.B.I. bullied her into submission and threatened her with 27 years jail unless she cooperated, her mother constantly harassed and the lengths the Lewinsky family went to shield her little brother from the scandal.
Twenty four years later, she understand the power inbalance between her and the former President and reveals its taken this long to accept it was his abuse of power that led to the relationship.
America's Federal Bureau of Investigation was tipped off to the affair by one of Lewinsky's so called friends, Linda Tripp, whom she still can't forgive, led to her phone calls being tapped & her every move scrutinised. She said she refused to wear a wire.
Now, she has come to accept the situation she finds herself in. Rather than hiding like a flower bud, she is beginning to bloom like a flower.
The now 46 year old has teamed up with twitter creating anti bullying videos to help others who have and are being shamed on line.
"Hurt people hurt people" she said referring to a now 'Amercanism' largely unheard of by the Australian audience, which Lewinsky explains is a term she came to find from research of a young man so lonely he wanted others to feel his pain.
Towards the end of the 65 minute talk, Lewinsky left the audience with two profound pieces of information, the first; she wants to become a producer to help others, as main stream employment is too hard, and the second; the short statured, dark haired beauty received a DM (direct message) via social media which read 'we are so sorry you had to go through this alone'
