In the heart of Poland, under the harsh rule of Nazi occupation, the Jewish citizens of Warsaw were corralled into an area of just 840 acres, surrounded by barbed wire and relentless surveillance. This place, known as the Warsaw Ghetto, soon became home to nearly half a million souls, living in unimaginable conditions. Disease and starvation were rampant, claiming thousands of lives each month. In July 1942, a harrowing phase began- 6,000 Jews a day were deported to the Treblinka extermination camp. Despite Nazi assurances of labor camps, the grim truth of extermination leaked back to the ghetto, sparking a desperate blaze of resistance Armed with few weapons but a fierce spirit, the Jewish Combat Organization, or ZOB, was formed. They fought valiantly against the crushing might of the Nazi forces. However, on this day, the uprising was brutally suppressed. The last synagogue was destroyed. The surviving residents faced a bleak fate at Treblinka
