Former Turin football coach Ezio Rossi described the last moments of the passionate traveler and photographer Livio Fassinotti, who, while trying to capture an attractive picture from the Dakar rally, was hit by a truck of Alyos Loprais and subsequently died from a serious injury.
“I saw him die in front of me with my own eyes,” Rossi said, mourning the loss of a friend he knew shortly before the fatal accident.
Fassinotti, 69, was well known in his hometown of Nona, thanks in large part to his passion for Africa, the Middle East and the deserts he wrote books about, as well as cars. He is said to have often participated in volunteer activities and, among other things, presented his experiences and photographs at school exhibitions.
Shortly before the fatal collision with Loprais' truck, Fassinotti photographed Ezio Rossi on the track.
“He took a picture of me ten minutes before he left us. As soon as we met, you told me about your passion for cars and the desert. After a few minutes, I realized that you are a wonderful person ... And then you ran under that dune to take a damn photo. Goodbye Livio. Rest in peace," Rossi wrote on social media.
