Migration drivers, dynamics and impacts are highly gendered, with gender norms shaping migratory decisions on who stays, who moves and how resources are allocated. This session looks at comparative dynamics of gendered processes and outcomes in the context of South-South migration and explores the consequences of migration for gender inequalities, identifying potential areas of policy refom and political action at different levels which are likely to have positive impacts on migrants, their families and communities. The Migration for Development and Equality (MIDEQ) Hub works with a global network of partners in 12 countries in the Global South, organized into six migration corridors, to transform understandings of the relationships between migration, development and inequality. The project seeks to promote a better understanding of how structural inequalities—related to poverty, age, gender and race—drive migration and limit its potential to contribute to personal, societal and global development, and propose ways to overcome inequalities and improve migration outcomes.
